What we do

Four jobs. One shop.

The rebuild

What a rebuild actually replaces

A rebuild is a teardown. Scroll through the unit in the order it comes apart on the bench, and what each part tells us.

  1. 01

    Torque converter

Shudder at 40–60 mph, stalling in gear, overheating.

Replaced with a Dayco converter when it's the cause.

  2. 02

    Pump & bell housing

Whine on startup, delayed engagement, front leak.

Pump inspected; seals and bushings replaced.

  3. 03

    Clutch packs & bands

Slipping, flare between gears, burnt-smelling fluid.

Frictions, steels and bands from the rebuild kit.

  4. 04

    Planetary gear sets

Grinding, no reverse, metal in the pan.

Inspected; hard parts replaced only when worn.

  5. 05

    Valve body & solenoids

Hard or late shifts, warning light, wrong gear.

Cleaned, solenoids tested, updated where needed.

  6. 06

    Pan, filter & fluid

Brown or black fluid, leaks, low level.

New filter, gasket and fresh fluid on every rebuild.

The first check

What colour is your fluid?

It's the first thing Tom checks in the lot, before anyone talks price. Pull the dipstick and match it.

Fresh

Bright red, clear, no smell

Healthy fluid. If you still have a symptom, the fluid isn't the cause; bring it in for a diagnosis.

Worn

Darker red, slightly cloudy

Normal ageing. Plan a fluid and filter service, sooner if the vehicle tows or sits in Miami traffic all day.

Burnt

Brown, smells burnt

The clutches are overheating. Don't wait: this is the stage where a repair is still cheaper than a rebuild.

Black or metallic

Black, gritty, metal flakes

Internal wear. Stop driving it and call the shop; towing beats grinding the hard parts further.

Sound familiar?

  • Slipping or delayed engagement
  • Shudder at cruising speed
  • Hard or late shifts
  • No reverse
  • Red fluid under the car
  • Transmission or check-engine light

Built for the heavy stuff

Pickups, SUVs and commercial vans are regular jobs here. Reviewers have brought F-150s, Expeditions, Suburbans, Jeep Wranglers and fleet vans, and one crew tows a 30-foot travel trailer with the truck we rebuilt.

Who you'll deal with

Tom and his son run the counter and the bench.

Hi-Tech Transmissions is owner-operated. The person who checks your fluid in the lot is the person who quotes the job and the person who rebuilds it. The shop does transmissions and nothing else: repairs, in-house rebuilds with Transtar kits, Dayco torque converters, and computer diagnostics.
