The first check
It's the first thing Tom checks in the lot, before anyone talks price. Pull the dipstick and match it.
Fresh
Bright red, clear, no smell
Healthy fluid. If you still have a symptom, the fluid isn't the cause; bring it in for a diagnosis.
Worn
Darker red, slightly cloudy
Normal ageing. Plan a fluid and filter service, sooner if the vehicle tows or sits in Miami traffic all day.
Burnt
Brown, smells burnt
The clutches are overheating. Don't wait: this is the stage where a repair is still cheaper than a rebuild.
Black or metallic
Black, gritty, metal flakes
Internal wear. Stop driving it and call the shop; towing beats grinding the hard parts further.

Slipping or delayed engagement, hard or late shifts, shudder at cruising speed, a whine, a burnt smell, red fluid under the car, or a transmission or check-engine light. One of these on its own is a reason to check the fluid; two together are a reason to call.
Short distances, gently, to the shop. Every mile a clutch slips it burns; that's the difference between a repair and a rebuild.
Most vehicles: engine warm and running, in Park on level ground, pull the dipstick, wipe, reinsert, read. Bright red and clear is healthy; brown and burnt-smelling is not. Some newer vehicles have no dipstick and are checked at the shop.
That speed range is where the torque converter clutch locks up. A shudder there usually points to the converter or to old fluid.
Yes. The transmission reports through the same system, so gear-ratio, solenoid and converter faults light the check-engine lamp even when the engine is fine.
It depends on which of the causes above it is. The shop diagnoses first and quotes the exact repair before starting, so you're paying for your car's actual fault, not a guess.
